Chef De Tournant Mam Xoliswa Ndoyiya is the head chef of Sanctuary Mandela's Insights restaurant. He served as the personal and home chef of former President Nelson Mandela for 22 years and prepared his favorite meals for him before his death.

The menu is inspired by Madiba’s most popular dishes and is “the historical footprint of Nelson Mandela’s strangest taste, whose passion and integrity are reflected in dishes inspired by Africa and other regions”.

Insights Restaurant provides customers with a delicious culinary experience by improving and modernizing Madiba’s favorite flavors, doing a great job.

Tata likes oxtail. “If he didn't have my oxtail recipe, he would not finish it in a week,” Ndoyiya said during an intimate tasting menu recently.

Braised oxtail wontons with creamy mustard sauce, tomato and herb salsa and tarragon sauce, stood out from the dishes we tasted. I understand why Madiba likes this recipe so much-it is simply delicious and all the flavors are perfectly integrated.

Cape Malay fish head, fried golden klipp, papaya curry sauce, pickled pumpkin crumbs and seeds follow the oxtail. I like the taste of salsa and pumpkin crumbs.

The menu also offers vegetarian options such as mushrooms and samp risotto (samp cooked in risotto style) with pan-fried oyster mushrooms, peas and roasted cashews.

If you like tartar, Ethiopian kitfo is a must-try for beginners. Spiced beef tartare served with quail eggs, homemade roast, smoked paprika aioli and crispy capers.

Judiet Barnes, Chief Marketing Officer of Motsamayi Tourism Group said: “The restaurant’s gastronomic experience makes you feel like you have a personal connection with Madiba.”

We totally agree. Enjoy meals prepared by Madiba’s former chef in his home, now an upscale boutique hotel, integrating the memories and moments of Madiba’s life into every detail of the home is an experience you may never forget.
