The volume of sales of the 2021-2022 U.S. mushroom crop totaled 702 million pounds, down 7% from last season. The value of sales for the 2021-2022 U.S. mushroom crop was $1.02 billion, down 4% from the previous season. The average reported price was $1.45 per pound, up $0.05 from the previous year.

Agaricus mushroom volume of sales totaled 680 million pounds, down 8% from the 2020-2021 season. Pennsylvania accounted for 66% of the total volume of sales, and second-ranked California contributed 11%. The value of the Agaricus crop was estimated at $931 million, down 7% from a year ago.

Brown mushrooms, including Portabello and Crimini varieties, accounted for 203 million pounds, up 5% from last season. Brown mushrooms accounted for 30% of the total Agaricus volume sold and 36% of the total Agaricus value.

U.S. fresh market sales of Agaricus mushrooms totaled 616 million pounds, down 8% from the previous season, while processed sales, at 64 million pounds, decreased 4% from the previous season. Growers reported U.S. fresh market production made up 91% of total sales volume while processed production represented the remaining 9%. Grower total filling intentions for the 2022-2023 crop are 112 million square feet, down 4% from the total fillings in the 2021-2022 season.

Agaricus mushroom growers in Chester County, Pennsylvania produced 321 million pounds, an increase of 1% compared with the 2020-2021 growing season. This production was valued at $329 million, up 3% from the previous season. The growing area in Chester County was 11.7 million square feet, up 22% from last season. Total fillings were 56.7 million square feet, up 20% from the 2020-2021 growing season.

Specialty Mushrooms — Shiitake, Oyster and all Other Exotics

Value of sales for commercially grown specialty mushrooms in 2021-2022 totaled $87.3 million, up 32% from the 2020-2021 season. A specialty grower is defined as having at least 200 natural wood logs in production or some commercial indoor growing area and $200 or more in sales. The average price received by growers, at $3.88 per pound, was up $0.67 from the previous season estimate.

Certified Organic Agaricus and Specialty Mushrooms

Growers produced 156 million pounds of mushrooms that were certified organic during the 2021-2022 growing season, 19% above 2020-2021. Forty-nine percent of the total, or 76.1 million pounds, were sold as certified organic mushrooms. Agaricus mushrooms accounted for 82% of the mushrooms sold as certified organic while all specialty mushrooms made up the remainder.

U.S. corn production for grain is forecast at 13.9 billion bushels, down 3% from the previous forecast and down 8% from 2021. Based on conditions as of Sept. 1, yields are expected to average 172.5 bushels per harvested acre, down 2.9 bushels from the previous forecast and down 4.5 bushels from last year.

Total planted area, at 88.6 million acres, is down 1% from the previous estimate and down 5% from the previous year. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 80.8 million acres, down 1% from the previous forecast and down 5% from the previous year.

Soybean production for beans is forecast at 4.38 billion bushels, down 3% from the previous forecast and down 1% from 2021. Based on conditions as of Sept. 1, yields are expected to average 50.5 bushels per harvested acre, down 1.4 bushels from the previous forecast and down 0.9 bushel from 2021.

Total planted area, at 87.5 million acres, is down 1% from the previous estimate but up less than 1% from the previous year. Area harvested for beans in the United States is forecast at 86.6 million acres, down 1% from the previous forecast but up less than 1% from 2021.

All U.S. tobacco production for 2022 is forecast at 442 million pounds, down 3% from the previous forecast and down 7% from 2021. Area harvested, at 211,000 acres, is down 5% from the previous month and down 4% from last year. Yield for the 2022 crop year is forecast at 2,100 pounds per acre, up 42 pounds from last month but 83 pounds below last year.

Corn production for grain is forecast at 128 million bushels, down 24% from 2021. Based on conditions as of Sept. 1, yields are expected to average 150 bushels per harvested acre, down 19 bushels from the previous year. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 850,000 acres, down 14% from the previous year.

Soybean production for beans is forecast at 25.2 million bushels, down 20% from 2021. Based on conditions as of Sept. 1, yields are expected to average 43 bushels per harvested acre, down 10 bushels from the previous year. Area harvested for beans in Pennsylvania is forecast at 585,000 acres, down 2% from 2021.

Tobacco production is forecast at 13 million pounds, down 7% from 2021. Area harvested, at 5,300 acres, is down 50 acres from the previous year. Yield for the 2022 crop year is forecast at 2,448 pounds per acre, down 173 pounds from last year.

New Jersey cranberry producers expect to harvest 590,000 barrels in 2022, compared to 589,000 barrels in 2021. Massachusetts production is forecast at 2 million barrels, up 11% from the year before. Oregon producers expect to harvest 550,000 barrels, up 6% from 2021. Wisconsin production is forecast at 4.30 million barrels, also up 3% from 2021 production.

Early in the growing season, Wisconsin and Massachusetts growers reported the crop experienced cold, wet weather and hail. The planting season started the first week of June but was delayed due to rainy days. Warmer temperatures and better weather conditions helped cranberry plants and berries to develop.

Total forecast for these four states is 7.44 million barrels, compared to a realized 7.07 million barrels in 2021.
