Compared with the traditional method of using wheat, rice and mustard straw to make compost, using bagasse to make compost for mushrooms can achieve higher yield and protein content.

The Mushroom Research Council (DMR), operated by the Agricultural Research Council of India, has perfected the use of bagasse to compost mushrooms. The use of this technology will also significantly reduce production costs.

DMR Director and Vice President Sharma said: “Scientists evaluated four raw materials used to make mushroom compost, namely wheat straw, rice straw, mustard grass and bagasse."

"The results of a three-year evaluation by different centers of the All India Mushroom Coordination Research Project show that bagasse and wheat straw are the most suitable materials for composting," he added.

Bagasse has the highest protein content and the largest diameter, followed by wheat straw and straw. "The total yield of bagasse is higher. Mushrooms produced from bagasse are found to have the usual nutrients, which are 35% protein, low fat, high potassium, no starch and vitamins B, D and C, among other things Health benefits," Sharma said.
