SHS Select Orchestra concert is Saturday at Beatty Park

STEUBENVILLE — Steubenville High School’s Select Orchestra will present a concert at Beatty Park on Saturday, beginning at 6 p.m.

If it is raining, the concert will be postponed and rescheduled at a later date, according to Flora VerStraten-Merrin, founder of the Friends of Beatty Park, event sponsor.

The concert is free with cash concessions and park and street parking available. Attendees should bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy the performance at the Storybook walk area.

“The Steubenville High School Select Orchestra meets regularly after school to prepare for upcoming performances,” explained Joe Diamond, orchestra director. The orchestra includes students in grades nine through 12 who also are members of the full high school orchestra. “The Steubenville High School Select Orchestra would like to thank Beatty Park for the performance opportunity and looks forward to more performances like this in the future,” Diamond commented,

VerStraten-Merrin said Friends of Beatty Park is “super excited” to have the orchestra in the park and hopes that the community will attend the concert so that they can offer more concerts in the future.

“This is the perfect venue for an orchestra,” she said. “To be in nature and to enjoy the sights and sounds of being in our city’s only nature park will be such a treat to our eyes and ears,” she added. “This music crosses all boundaries and knowing the advantages of listening to and being exposed to classical is so encouraging Research shows that listening to live classical music evokes positive feelings in children, and has a direct impact on their listening and concentration skills. Children feel calm and relaxed while listening to live classical music, regardless of the piece being played and increases brain function, a study has found,” she noted.

Beatty Park events are posted on the group’s Facebook page, and the 2022 calendar is posted at the park, near the entrance of the large historical sign. Beatty Park brochures and calendars are located at the Steubenville Visitors Center, Leonardo’s Coffee Shop, Prodigal Daughter Trinkets and Treasures, the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.

An upcoming event is an “Advanced Hike to the Fossil” on June 4 at 10 a.m. “We will be explaining fossils found in the park, the large fossil find and other archaeological features in the park and in the area,” VerStraten-Merrin explained. John Boileigh of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources will be leading the hike to the fossil.
